I am in a gray zone where docs are docs are leaving the decision to do radiation or not, up to me...they day the benefits and the risks are about the same for me
I had one lymph node positive, multi-focal IDC, and extensive DCIS, HER2+ve.
Had a mastectomy, TCH chemotherapy, still doing Herceptin.....
I have had 2nd, 3rd and 4th opinions, ALL saying I am in a gray zone, ALL say that I could go either way. I can't believe not one can give me a straight answer.....

@A MyBCTeam Member I have been repeatedly told I'm in the grey zone with a micrometasis in one out of one node taken. I'm 1b did the bilateral mastectomy but no axillary dissection. Had an intermediate oncotype (24) so am doing 4 rounds of TC chemo and then was told to plan for 5-6 weeks of radiation post chemo. I had docs tell me I needed and did not need to radiation, but I figured with half the docs saying yes I needed to be aggressive and do it. I will start mid march after I recover from my last chemo this wed. Good luck on your decision. Ill be thinking of you.
@A MyBCTeam Member I definitely have an opinion on this one. I have congestive heart failure and in 2010 had to have a total Pericardectomy, because of radiation! I am on 2 heart meds, oxygen at night and still have difficulty breathing. So I would definitely say no to radiation. However, this is your decision and you have to live with it, so pray earnestly for wisdom and then do what you feel is right for you. God bless you. I'll be praying with you also.
I had heart damage from radiation, severe enough to require heart surgery. Now have congestive heart failure from radiation. Also developed asthma after radiation. There's a lot of risk involved for a gray area. I'll be praying that you make the right decision for you.
@A MyBCTeam Member I am also in the grey area! My medical oncologist strongly suggests radiation due to my tumor grade (2B, 1 Node), Triple Positive Status, and my age of 35. The radiation oncologist wasn't to keen on me having radiation because of the response I've had to my chemo regimen of Perjeta, Herceptin, Taxotere, and Carboplatin. My MRI was negative after my 3rd treatment. I'm scheduled for a BMX on April 2 with immediate reconstruction. Radiation will start 4 weeks post op. I'm super nervous, but my plastic surgeon said the medical oncologist is most up-to-date on all the research and is the "Captain" of my ship right now. Hope this helps. Hugs to you. Typically if having mastectomy and less than 3 nodes positive radiation wouldn't be indicated. And radiation can ruin reconstruction options so keep that in mind too.
